“Designing the Dark Side”

•December 28, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas! I sure did.. And I have this baby to play around with. (SNES Emulator!! /swoon)

We were treated today with a nice little development feature showing off the differences between the Sith Warrior and Inquisitor play styles. Not anything groundbreaking really. The information is very general and cryptic. Sith Warrior is a melee beast, Sith Inquisitor is a ranged force user. Two completely seperate storylines… Yadda, yadda, yadda.

If your found this blog, odds are you already knew that.

However, a visual is always nice. Plus, there is a clip at the end showing 3 people playing the game side by side in what looks like a little PvP skirmish. This was the highlight of the video for me because it gives an actual view of what the game looks like while being played aside from the super polished versions that Bioware press releases.

Video can be seen here.

Have a great day people!

Merry Christmas!

A very merry Christmas to the entire SWTOR community! Just back from a Christmas Eve party and I am totally food coma-ing right now…

One can’t help but notice that Christmas is one of the only times a year where people tend to forget about what else is going on and just come together and have a good time. I sincerely hope everyone out there just takes a break from all the silly things in their lives and just enjoys the company of their friends and family.

I personally have a completely full plate tomorrow. Brunch at a friends house, down at my moms around noon, back up to a co-worker’s place for a dinner party then rounding it all out chilling with some friends watching some movies. All set for an awesome time! I hope yours is the same!

The idea of Mustafar being a playable planet in SWTOR…. /cringe

I mean the planets entire purpose was to put Vaderkin in a situation where he could catch on fire.

Browsing the forums today I saw a fluff thread asking if Mustafar would be in TOR. I was fully prepared to come into the thread and flame (lolpun) any idea of Mustafar in this game but then I looked up Mustarfar’s page on Wookieepedia.

Appparently, Mustafar wasn’t always the screwed up plot device Episode 3 makes it out to be.

It says, me paraphrasing, that around 5000 BBY Mustafar was a lush green planet home to one of the most gifted Jedi masters and practitioners of the physical force ever. Then in 3996 BBY the onslaught of the re-emergent Sith brought a battle that was so EPIC it literally screwed up the planets orbit. This all takes place about 350 years before the Treaty of Coruscant.

Unfortunately that means Mustafar as we know it is still a fugged up lava lamp at the time SWTOR takes place. It would have actually been a cool/interesting idea if we could have had a pre-lava Mustafar in the game. It would add a similar nostalgic feeling like when they added Alderaan.

It’s like “Hey, you remember this planet this way… Well back then it was this, sucka!”

Realistically even as a paradise Mustafar wouldn’t be a likely pick for a playable planet. Lush landscapes, Jedi infested temples… Sounds really familiar. At any rate, it was still something to think about.

I wonder if there are other planets that underwent drastic changes before they were shown as we know them in the prequel/original trilogy.

The Sith Inquisition: A Basic Introduction

“The dark side of the force is a pathway to abilities some would consider to be… Unnatural.”

The Sith Inquisitor is the 4th announced playable Sith faction class rounding out all of the 8 in total that will be playable at launch. The Sith Inquisitor is a counterpart to the Jedi Consular class meaning we will play a great deal of support. Heals, CC, Buffs/Debuffs are all likely.

Specialization will be divided between Ranged Combat/Support (Palpatine inspired) and Acrobatic melee. (Darth Maul inspired) Although no specific information on specializations has been released, we can all hope that we don’t get into a WoW spec system where you will see guilds spamming “Active Guild LF Raiding SI, no more melee plz!” Cookie cutter specs are never fun.

The Holonet indicates that Inquisitors favor light armor like decorative robes to suit their political aspirations, as opposed to their Sith Warrior buddies who are more likely to wear more protection.

Weapon wise most of the promotional SI pictures depict using a double-bladed while there are some that show using a single blade. There’s no evidence of Bioware locking any Jedi class into using any style saber specifically yet but that could very well change once specialization details are released.

Overall the Sith Inquisitor looks like a beautiful alternative to the Sith Warrior. Lots of flashing lightning based attacks, tons of crowd control and group support. However, this class will not be for everyone.

Holonet entry for the Sith Inquisitor can be found here. Some pretty videos and nice RP themed descriptions.

Tatooine— Shocking!

•December 19, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Okay— So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Tatooine is going to be a playable planet in TOR… I mean that’s basically the equivalent of announcing that Jedi in The Old Republic will use lightsabers. However it is kinda surprising that it took Bioware this long to officially announce it.

I don’t think anyone was speculating that Tatooine wasn’t going to be in the launch version of the game. Take a look at any other Star Wars game out there and there’s a good chance theres a playable Tat level. Here we are 7 planets in and were just getting our first look at an all too familiar place.

Makes the newer sandcrawlers look like Honda Elements.

“The Jundland Wastes are not to be travelled lightly..”

As a Star Wars Galaxies player, I am very familiar with a realized Tatooine world in a MMO setting. It can be beautifully dangerous. There is literally tons of content that can be packed into Tatooine. The place in filled to the brim culture, mostly underworld and mercenary however it’s one of the best places to find adventure. Think of the entire planet as the sketchy part of town, families are not taking vacations here!

“Tatooine is sparcely populated– We shall find them quickly, master.”

What does this mean for Sith Inquisitors? Go watch a Star Wars movie, jebus… Imagine yourself a kin to Darth Maul. Hunting your way through the desert sands. Holding your saber to the throat of a less than willing informant. This world means nothing to you. It’s people and resources are yours for exploitation.

“If there’s a bright center of the universe, you’re on the planet that’s farthest from.”

An interesting quote from A New Hope… After all these years Tatooine would sure love to still be considered a little hide away planet with nothing going for it… That may have worked in 1977 but in 2009 that isn’t floating.

Get ready for drinks in the cantina with your favorite smuggler  and building sand castles with your new Jawa friends! (playable? /speculation)
